Neches, Texas, is a small town of about 270 people in eastern Anderson County, where US-79 meets Farm Roads 321 and 2574 about nine miles northeast of Palestine and roughly sixteen miles, or twenty minutes, southwest of Jacksonville. It has its own school district, Neches ISD, and a history going back to the railroad's arrival in 1872, when it had two steam sawmills running. The Neches River runs about four miles away, and the land between the town and the river is bottomland hardwood, big water oaks, sweetgum and elm, while the uplands along the highway are pine and post oak.
