Rusk is the county seat of Cherokee County, Texas, about fourteen miles south of Jacksonville where US-69 meets US-84. Around 5,300 people live here, and it is home to the courthouse square, Rusk State Hospital, the eastern end of the Texas State Railroad and what is billed as the longest wooden footbridge in the country, built around 1861. It is also where Wade Tolliver grew up, so the crew knows these streets. Rusk's older neighborhoods carry the biggest hardwoods we work on anywhere: post oaks, red oaks and pecans planted a century ago, now hanging over roofs and power drops. The newer edges of town run to pine and sweetgum on sandy ridges. Rusk ISD serves the town.
