Arp, Texas, is a town of just under 900 people in southeastern Smith County, on State Highway 135 and the Union Pacific line, with Kickapoo Creek running just south of town. It is about twenty-six road miles, or forty minutes, from Jacksonville by way of Troup, which makes it the northeastern edge of where we work. Arp ISD serves the town. Arp was a tomato-shipping and oil town in its day, peaking at about 2,500 people in the 1930s, and its older streets still carry the big shade trees planted in that era, pecans and oaks that now overhang houses and lines. Outside town the land is pasture, creek bottom and pine. Kickapoo Creek bottomland grows heavy hardwoods that lean as the bank erodes, and the pine ridges lose tops to ice every few winters. Because Arp is at the edge of our route, we batch its estimates with Troup and Whitehouse work.
