Reklaw is a town of about 330 people on the Cherokee and Rusk county line in East Texas, where US-84 meets State Highway 204, roughly ten miles northeast of Rusk and about a half hour from our shop in Jacksonville by SH-204. The name is Walker spelled backwards, chosen in 1902 because the town was laid out on Margaret Walker's land and the name Walker was already taken. Reklaw is in Rusk ISD and grew up on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad, with a sawmill among its first businesses. The country around it is classic Piney Woods timberland: loblolly and shortleaf pine stands, post oak on the sandy rises and sweetgum and water oak along the creeks. Many properties here are wooded acreage with a house set well back from the highway, so clearing a home site, opening a fence line or removing a pine that has died to beetles is more common than the single-tree yard job.
